Prophetic Literature 2008: Syllabus

Course Description

The course investigates in a critical manner the prophetic literature that is, the body of writings that witnesses to and grows out of the ministry of the prophets of the Old Testament. This would also entail an investigation of the religious, social, and political context of ancient Israel's prophets and the literature attributed to them in the Hebrew Canon paying attention to the prophets' struggle for justice and the call to be faithful to YHWH.

Time

The class meets every Monday morning from 8:10 - 10:00 with a 5 minute break in between and every Tuesday morning from 8:10 - 8:55.

Chapter I: Basic Questions about the Prophetic Literature of Ancient Israel

Chapter II: Prophecy in the Ancient Near East

Chapter III: General Overview of the the Former Prophets

Chapter IV: Prophetic Literature in the Eight Century B.C.

Chapter V: Prophetic Literature During Exile

Chapter VI: Prophetic Literature After the Exile

Chapter VII: Conclusion

Requirements

1) Reading for the First Major Examination (20%)
Anthony R. Ceresko, Introduction to the Old Testament: A Liberation Perspective (revised and updated edition; NY: Orbis, 2001 / Quezon City: Claretian, 2001), pp. 123-282, chapters 11-21.

2) Academic Research Paper (25%)
